The Compass and its Many Uses

Discovered in China in the 4th century the compass has been used as anything from a feng shui device to a navigational instrument for seafarers to a guide for engineers. What started out as lodestones (an iron oxide that aligns itself to the north and south) in a bowl of water has now become a compact magnetized device helping to further exploration and design. How many uses does this seemingly small device have?

Exploration and discovery
Though it started out as a feng shui device, the compass has helped further exploration of different lands, people’s and ways of life. Without the compass we may never have known how big the Earth really is.

It has also been instrumental in allowing for importing and exporting goods to other countries. Never before had people tasted foods not local to their land and had access to foreign goods. This created wealth for countries if they had local goods that others wanted and allowed the sea merchants to arrive safely with goods. It is also credited with speeding up deliveries and making more money for countries. When guided only by the sun and stars often ships would never arrive to their destinations. (more…)
