It’s never easy when families grow up, and invariably not everyone stays in the same place. My family has moved all over the place over the years but we ended up in the south of England, and that is where I have stayed. A few years ago though, after my brother finished University, he told us all that in a couple of years him and his American girlfriend would be moving over to America together. I think we took this with a pinch of salt at the time, but as they said, two years later they were gone. This was difficult for me because I had been very close to my brother for years. (more…)
London is one of the best places in the world when it comes to live entertainment. If you head into Camden on any night of the week you can find live bands playing, both signed and unsigned. There are numerous large venues to explore, which offer tickets for many international acts. Whatever sort of music you like, your tastes will undoubtedly be catered for in London. The famous Dublin Castle in Camden has bands playing seven nights a week with four or five bands playing every night, and a quick look at their website shows just how diverse the music is there.
If food is your thing then you will not be disappointed by what is on offer in London. As well as numerous Michelin Starred restaurants, there are hundreds of lovely little eateries that you will never have heard of. Granted, this is often a case of pot luck, but sometimes that is the fun of being into great food. You never know where there is a hidden gem until you find it! (more…)
Paris is a wonderful place to visit whatever the reason, but if you are particularly interested in Art, then there can be nowhere quite as special as Paris. The city of Paris is blessed with two of the finest galleries in the world, with the National Museum of Modern art situated in the Pompidou Centre, and the wonderful Louvre, home of the Mona Lisa.
Both Museum’s are perfect locations for their work. The Pompidou Centre is a modern Architectural gem, designed in the early seventies with a futuristic style in mind, whilst the Louvre is a former Palace building, in fact occupied at one time By Napoleon Bonapart. (more…)
As Branson winds down the year 2009 you can almost hear a sigh. It is to the hearers imagination to believe this sigh is a sigh of relief the 2009 entertainment season is drawing to a close. Or maybe because it is a sigh that 2009 has been a slightly better year than 2008 which was a real disaster. I personally thought with lower fuel prices 2009 would be much better than 2008 but it turns out that folks are concerned about the economy and wonder about their job or maybe whether the company they receive a pension from will even be in business next year.
I know if that sigh is coming from someone that is involved in a show that it is a sigh of relief that they have really “broken a leg” (a saying from a back stage colleague when someone goes on stage to really give it their all) in their effort to do everything they could to make 2009 as successful as they could. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a few hours on a hot afternoon than by sipping a Singapore Sling in Raffles Hotel. I’d been walking around Singapore for most of the day and was feeling in dire need of a long, cool drink. The sweet pink concoction was exactly the right fix as I sat underneath Raffles’ electric fans and enjoyed the cool breeze.
This was my first day in Singapore. I’d arrived very early that morning and slept for a few hours before facing the hot, steamy city that never seems to stop. When I woke I was very hungry and went to one of the many hawker centres dotted around Singapore. I looked at the options and realised Cornflakes were out of the question so I pointed to whatever looked good. I ended up with a very tasty selection of vegetable curries and noodles – not my standard breakfast fare but when in Singapore… (more…)

The time has passed when citizens could cross many international borders without the need of a passport. Once, a quick trip to Mexico or Aruba required nothing more than a valid driver’s license and sometimes your birth certificate. They still are not needed for travel to a U.S. Territory, but they are required for almost every other nation. Changes in the law means that there is now much more passport information travelers should know.
One new offering is a passport card. These will fit in your wallet, and cost less than a full passport, or passport book. They are valid only for travel to select nations within the western hemisphere, if said travel is by land or sea and not air. They are useful for cruises to the Caribbean or cross border trips to Canada and Mexico. However, it is best to review the entry laws for the specific nation to which you plan to travel, since some will require further documentation.
A traditional passport is still required for most international destinations and for all international flights. It may be possible to renew your passport via mail, if you meet the requirements. If you have never had a passport, or it has been longer than 15 years since it was issued, you must apply in person. There are several regional passport agencies, but most post offices and some country clerks also process passport applications. (more…)
