A Camping Checklist to Get You Started

Published: Jan 10th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

When you’re camping, it’s important to have some essentials with you. It’s a good idea to put a camping checklist together to make sure you have everything you need. While there are some things that you may need for some types of camping, but not for others, you should always have a list as a guideline so that you can make sure you aren’t forced to do without anything (such as food), and will be able to have a fun, relaxing, well prepared trip.

Many people don’t know exactly what they are looking for in a camping checklist, because they aren’t sure what type of camping they will be doing. That’s your first step, to recognize how much carrying space you will have. For instance, if you’ll be hiking to your destination, then it’s unlikely that you will have the space you might have if you were to back your vehicle up to your camping spot. It’s important to know that this is a general list and can be modified to meet your individual needs, but this camping checklist should help you to get started on your camping adventure.

* Camping Tents – you will need a tent of some kind and make sure you have everything that goes with it, such as extra stakes, a tarp and possibly a shade tarp and mat for the entrance of your tent.
* Sleeping Bags – At the very least, you will need a sleeping bag and pillow of some sort. If you’re able to bring your vehicle, you may want to consider a sleeping pad, cot, or air mattress.
* Water – You must have a way to get fresh water, so if you’re backpacking, this means a water filter in some cases, but if you’re hitting a campsite, where there is water provided, jugs will do.
* Cooking Equipment and Camping Food – You should also have food, a cook pot and a camp stove, which can be as complicated or as simple as you need. If you’re backpacking, consider food items which will not spoil and are easy to carry and cook, but if you have the luxury of being able to carry a cooler, feel free to pack your food and drinks in there. Consider ways to clean up your supplies when you’re done and don’t forget plastic baggies for your garbage. (more…)

Cave art dates back to prehistoric times. Some is said to be more than 40,000 years old. Most of the paintings were done with charcoal on the rock. What does the cave art mean? Researchers and explorers have been trying to decipher the cave art for centuries. While some of it is believed to be stories of their culture including life, love, and war; most of it remains unclear.

Cave art has been discovered in many areas of the world including Europe, Australia, China, and Africa. This is another reason it is so hard to decipher as each culture used their own symbols, pictures, and maps in their cave art. However, the cave art is believed to have been done by elders and scholars of the cultures and that is does have significant meaning relating to the adventures, trials, and tribulations of their culture.

For those interested in exploring cave art, it can be seen in many caves throughout the world. The Chauvet Pont D’Arc was discovered in 1994 by three friends exploring the cave. They discovered numerous chambers filled with magnificent art. One of the greatest discoveries was the drawings of the wooly mammoth. A major exploration took place a short time later, proving the cave art to be original. It was declared a National Monument in 1995. (more…)

Camping & The Family Unit

Camping & The Family Unit

Over the years a sad change has taken place in our country, one born out of circumstance and need. A change that defines who we are as a people and a species, yet we never saw it coming, or if we did were to busy to give it much thought. A change that challenges the very structure of our civilization, and threatens the values that have kept us strong in times of crises. That change is within our own families.

My friends the concept of the “Family” as a unit has all but ceased to exist in today’s society. Sure we still fall in love, get married, and have kids, but as soon as the kids are out of the infant stage things seem to go down hill. Now don’t get me wrong it’s not your fault, I know you parents out there love your kids with all your hearts, and I know you kids love your parents. It’s just a very busy and stressful world we live in today. In most cases both Mom and Dad have to work to make ends meet, not to mention the meetings, appointments, and the endless running around that it takes just to keep a household functioning properly. So what about the children, well they get introduced to an endless string of substitute parents in the form of, daycare givers, preschool, then their in school where their teachers are in charge, after school there are babysitters, or nannies for those that can afford them. In the evening, depending on Mom and Dad’s work schedule, the whole family might be in the house together, but things are different here too.

When I was a kid families would all sit down and eat supper together, maybe discuss their respective days. After dinner, once we all helped clean up, it was off to the living room. There was only one television in the house back then, so we’d all gather around and watch TV for the evening, talking, laughing, maybe even crying (depending on what we were watching) but it was us interacting with each other as a family.
