How To Drive Defensively In Mexico

Unlike driving in the U.S., Mexico’s roads have numerous speed bumps and road humps that may cause severe damage to personal and rental vehicles. These road interruptions are located on highways roads (except toll roads) and are designed to ensure drivers slow down and do not miss their exits. Unfortunately for all drivers, even those not planning to exit; all must slow down when approaching these highway exit signs.

Crossing these numerous speed bumps does remind drivers to slow down and be in control of their vehicles. For reasons beyond safety, drivers should always follow posted speed limits and obey all traffic rules. Mexican police are everywhere; both in highly visible and non-visible locations. They can be identified by their unmistakable, black vehicles. While some cities in the U.S. allow drivers to make a right-hand turn during a red light, in Mexico this action is not legal and could result in a fine.

Should your vehicle get pulled over by Mexican police, always be sure to present all licenses, insurances and permits. Remain calm and ask what traffic offense was committed. If you feel you were in the right, patiently explain why you feel that way and ask if there is anything you can do to make the situation better.
