Did you ever wonder how your pet feels when you go on a vacation and leave them behind? Pets and all other creatures have feeling and they can reason as well as have concerns. Just stop and think of some of the feeling your pet may be having when you go away for long periods, of time and they are, left alone to think about all kinds of things.

Your pet cat or dog loves you and they depend upon you for everything in their lives. Food and water are the most important things of course. Therefore, when you leave and the pet figures out you are gone the pet becomes concerned. Worrying about where you are and why you have left them.

They will also worry about how they will survive if the food and water are gone because you are not there to fill these needs. Therefore, all of these things are going through the pets mind. First, and foremost is the concern for you are you safe, where are you, and when will you come home.

You must remember your pets love you and they do miss you when you leave them. Even if it is for a short period, of time they will be in a state of distress. In addition, they would prefer to be or to go with you everywhere.

While you are considering going on vacation remember that pets need vacations too. The pet needs to be with you so he or she knows that everything is ok. Moreover, you did not leave him or her behind because you do not want them any longer, or they did something wrong to cause you to leave them.

Plenty of vacation spots and resort places now that realize that people; and their pet’s vacation together for the reasons mentioned above. Therefore, there is no reason not to take you pet with you when you go one vacation.

Your pet will be just as happy as you are to get out away from the same old things and explore new things. There are new smells, things to see, and places to encounter for your pet. However, the most important things is the fact that the pet is with you the person that he or she cares and worries about the most in the world. Your pet will also enjoy just lounging around with you while you rest and rejuvenate if that is what you need to do while you are on your vacation. The activity really does not matter to your pet so long as you are there.

If you are a dog owner, what do you do when it comes to taking your family holiday? Do you reward your dog for years of loyal service, keeping you company and guarding your home by leaving him or her at home or in kennels? This certainly wouldn’t be the preferred option for most dog owners. Well here’s an option for dog owners to consider – if you take a holiday in a self-catering holiday cottage you can often take your ‘best friend’ with you. You won’t have to worry about leaving him or her at home, you won’t have to pay for kennel fees and you will have a much better family holiday.

So where should you take your family and your four legged friend on holiday. The area of coastline where Dorset meets Devon, around Lyme Bay is an easily accessible part of England renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, sheltered harbours, sandy beaches, thatched cottages and pastoral landscape. There are so many dog friendly and family friendly walks in this stunning location – it’s a great place for getting out and about and exercising yourself and your dog. It’s an area that offers wonderful cliff top and coastal walks and scenic countryside walks inland.

In terms of dog friendly holiday accommodation, a self-catering holiday cottage is a great option. Many holiday cottage owners are happy to welcome considerate owners and their dogs so there is no need to leave your `best friend` at home. If you are considering taking your dog during the summer you should bear in mind that there are access restrictions for dogs on many Dorset and Devon beaches. Listed below are details of access to some of the main beaches in the Lyme Bay area. Even if access to the beach is restricted during the summer there are still plenty of fantastic coastal and countryside walks that you can enjoy with your dog(s).

Here is a quick guide to beach access for dogs around the Lyme Bay coast:

West Dorset beaches

Burton Bradstock beach – no dogs between 1st May and 30th September, except on East Beach.
West Bexington beach – dogs allowed in a restricted area.
Eype beach – dogs permitted.
West Bay – no dogs to the west of East Cliff
Lyme Regis – between 1st April and 31st October no dogs on Lyme Regis’s front beach and on leads for rest of year. Dogs allowed on Monmouth Beach, Cobb Gate and East Beach.
Charmouth beach – no dogs from 1st May to 30th September.

East Devon beaches

Beer beach – dogs are not permitted on the western side of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.
Budleigh Salterton – dogs are not permitted on the main beach from 1st May to 30th September.
Seaton – dogs are not permitted on the main beach from 1st May to 30th September.
Sidmouth – dogs are not permitted on the main beach from 1st May to 30th September.

The beauty of the West Dorset and East Devon area is that even when there is restricted access to the beaches there are so many other wonderful places to walk with your dog. With public footpaths and bridleways criss-crossing the area you will be spoilt for choice. You can enjoy cliff top walks, hill walks, river walks and woodland walks – you and your dog will enjoy the wonderful new territory to explore.

The considerate dog owner will be happy to abide by some basic ‘house rules’ when visiting pet friendly cottages – they are pretty common sense rules. Holiday cottage owners generally ask that dogs are kept off the furniture and out of bedrooms. In the interests of the animal and the property it is never advisable to leave a dog alone in a strange place – as such a dog should not be left unattended in the holiday cottage during your stay. Naturally all faeces should be cleared up and suitably disposed of during your holiday. Some holiday cottages will accommodate one dog and others will accommodate two (or maybe three) – always check first with the owners. When you are out and about please make sure that you don’t allow your dog or dogs to worry farm animals.

Somewhere to stay

As outlined one most flexible and convenient ways to take a holiday in the Lyme Bay area for dog owners is to book a self-catering holiday cottage. Lyme Bay Cottages provide self-catering holiday accommodation all year round with – some in quiet country hideaways others in lively little coastal towns and villages. You can view details of dog friendly cottages and more information about the Lyme Bay area at LymeBayCottages.com.

Adrian is a director of Lyme Bay Cottages Ltd. Lyme Bay Cottages offer a range of self catering Devon and Dorset cottages and dog friendly cottages on the beautiful Lyme Bay coast, England
