The Hawaiian Islands are made up of eight major islands – Hawaii, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui and Niihau – a few atolls and various small islets in the North Pacific Ocean. The 50th U.S. state since 1960, its history dates back so far that it’s actually in “pre-history” and is considered an ancient, noble “sea land” by its proud inhabitants. It is unknown exactly when the Polynesian explorers first set foot on the islands but it is certain that they were the first people to inhabit it. As the Hawaiian people did not always have a written language, but instead preserved their history with chants and legends, many details of the old days are lost forever. Some of the earlier history was also lost with the deaths of the Kahunas and other learned men whose job it was to pass on the knowledge to succeeding generations of Hawaiians through those songs and tales. Nevertheless, Hawaii grew and thrived and its people remained strong.
In 1778, Captain James Cook led an expedition that landed him on the islands of Kauai and Niihau. However, Cook was not the first man to discover the Hawaiian Islands, just the first known European to arrive. Studies of the Hawaiian language and various archaeological discoveries have led to the conclusion that Hawaii was actually settled in two separate waves of Polynesian migration. Captain Cook himself was also aware that the original Polynesian settlers came from the South Pacific up to a thousand years before his time. (more…)

Going on holidays with pets is often a difficult problem to manage. Very few hotels are adequately equipped for accommodating your cat or dog. The few hotels that do accept pets only allow them if they are small and on top of that often charge a high nightly fee for this service.
However, there is a good alternative way that makes it more convenient to bring your beloved pet, namely by staying in a vacation rental. By going to one of the many vacation home portals on the internet you can find accommodations that meet your criteria and that welcome your pets.
In fact, vacation homes often come with a garden, have more lenient and accommodating policies and usually do not charge any additional fee for bringing pets.
In this period of economic crisis more vacation rental owners are finding that by becoming more pet friendly they see an increase in bookings especially during low seasons when flexibility is more needed. In addition to this, pets on vacation seem to be well behaved, as was shown in a recent study by domegos.com. In fact it was found that out of the vacation home owners who accepted pets 97% never had any big issue with them. (more…)
Many people like to fly off over Christmas and the New Year, preferring to spend the break relaxing in a holiday resort rather than enjoying the usual festive traditions at home. Some people just don’t like the chilly temperatures and like to go to warmer regions where there’s a good chance of sunny weather. Others prefer to go to places that are fortunate to have some real winter weather and where snow makes the Christmas celebrations extra special.
In 2009 there seemed to be lots of places around the globe expecting a white Christmas and not just the typical mountain resorts in countries like Austria, Southern Germany or Italy. Places like New York and Chicago are reporting with almost certainty that they will have snow this year and in the UK and Ireland almost everywhere is reporting a better than 50 per cent chance of snow this Christmas. Even Madrid in Spain predicts a 25 per cent chance, which is very unusual in this city.
Naturally some of the best winter Christmas resorts are the picturesque villages in the European Alps. Places like Klosters and Verbier in Switzerland are classed as exclusive, which does not mean that some people are excluded from going there, but presumably refers to the cost of taking a break there, and does not make them an option for all but the very rich. Both are small villages with permanent populations of around 5000 and 3000 people respectively, but those numbers can treble or quadruple over the festive period as the hotels and chalets fill up with holidaymakers seeking that extra special Christmas holiday. Cruise ship holidays have been popular for many years where instead of being tied to one destination for your holiday you get to experience many more types of cultures and countries. Cruise ship holidays aren’t just spent on the decks of the cruise liner as many cruises have multiple stop offs at ports along the way, allowing you to set foot on land to experience the local atmosphere, do some gift shopping and other activities.
When people think of cruise ship holidays there are usually two main companies that come to mind: P&O and Cunard. Both have their advantages and their destinations can be similar with each one having a few different options compared to the other. Their cruise ships themselves are similar too in some ways but generally their fleet will have many different ships that can cater to different crowds. (more…)
