The Islands Of Hawaii

Published: Feb 21st, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

The Hawaiian Islands are made up of eight major islands – Hawaii, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui and Niihau – a few atolls and various small islets in the North Pacific Ocean. The 50th U.S. state since 1960, its history dates back so far that it’s actually in “pre-history” and is considered an ancient, noble “sea land” by its proud inhabitants. It is unknown exactly when the Polynesian explorers first set foot on the islands but it is certain that they were the first people to inhabit it. As the Hawaiian people did not always have a written language, but instead preserved their history with chants and legends, many details of the old days are lost forever. Some of the earlier history was also lost with the deaths of the Kahunas and other learned men whose job it was to pass on the knowledge to succeeding generations of Hawaiians through those songs and tales. Nevertheless, Hawaii grew and thrived and its people remained strong.

In 1778, Captain James Cook led an expedition that landed him on the islands of Kauai and Niihau. However, Cook was not the first man to discover the Hawaiian Islands, just the first known European to arrive. Studies of the Hawaiian language and various archaeological discoveries have led to the conclusion that Hawaii was actually settled in two separate waves of Polynesian migration. Captain Cook himself was also aware that the original Polynesian settlers came from the South Pacific up to a thousand years before his time. (more…)

How to Have a Pet Friendly Vacation

Published: Feb 7th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

One of the challenges with family vacations is deciding where you are going to leave the pets. You can drop them off at the grandparents, a friends, take them to a kennel, or… take them with you. Despite what you may have heard, bringing a pet along for a family vacation is not as complicating as you may think. While it is true that there are a lot of hotels that do not exactly welcome our four-legged family members with open arms, there are plenty that do. Here are a few helpful tips to make your next pet vacation go as smoothly as possible.

Tip #1 – Plan ahead. Once you make the decision to bring your pet on vacation, the quicker you start planning, the better. Reason be, there are many other pet owners that will be thinking the exact thing you are, and there is only so many rooms that most hotels have designated for this purpose. In general most hotels will put pets into smoking rooms, allowing for their remaining rooms to stay both smoke and allergy free. (more…)

Taking Your Pets on Vacation

Published: Jan 30th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

Pet ownership is a very large responsibility, as anyone who shares a home with an animal will attest to. From the early stages of adolescence with the hassles of housebreaking and over-abundances of youthful energy, to the daily grind of feedings, walks and cleanings, to the inevitable ravages of age, owning a pet – no matter the species – is not something to be undertaken lightly.

Part of that responsibility includes thinking of your pets when you make decisions about upcoming travel plans. No matter where you plan to go or for how long, you will need to take their needs into consideration. If you are going a long distance, and it requires you to take an airplane, you have two options. You can either risk a lot of discomfort and panic for your pet by putting them through the trauma of flying the cargo hold, or you can leave them with a trusted friend or a reputable boarding kennel. If you replace “pet” with “child”, you can see what would be the better choice. That’s not to say it’s the same situation by any means, but when travelling, you need to take your pet’s welfare into consideration. (more…)

How To Choose The Right Winter Vacation Spot

Published: Dec 1st, 2009 | Author: admin 1 Comment

There are so many people that head out on winter vacations every year to either get away from the cold weather, get away from too many family dinners, or just get away. But with all of the beautiful winter vacation destinations out there, how do you pick the right one for your family to enjoy? It can be an overwhelming task, and one that you shouldn’t take lightly either. Keep in mind that if you pick the wrong winter vacation spot, you will have a disasterous time, yet choose the right one and your family will have the vacation of a lifetime. To help you determine where your next winter vacation should be, let’s go through some simple questions and tips to narrow down your choices:

1. Budget: This is the first area that you need to nail down when starting your search for a winter vacation destination. Know how much you have to spend and what you want to spend on your winter getaway and you can easily narrow down choices by knocking some more expensive ones off of your list. Plus, you’ll be able to determine how far you can travel and what type of vacation rentals and activities you can enjoy.
2. Family Likes & Dislikes: Yet another biggie. You don’t want to book a cruise when your family is afraid of water, so you need to know exactly what their likes and dislikes are when it comes to vacation activities and so forth. If you aren’t sure, it’s ok to have everyone sit down and talk about what they want to do and what they don’t want to do on your winter vacation. This way, you can narrow down your choices again by simply ruling out those areas where there are more dislikes than likes. (more…)

Stops, Sights and Activities on a 7 Day Cruise Vacation

Published: Nov 28th, 2009 | Author: admin Add Comment

When most people think of luxury vacations, cruises rank high on the list, but until you’ve experienced one yourself, it’s tough to know exactly what to expect. This brief overview will fill you in on what the average 7-day cruise has to offer, from your cabin to time spent on the sea to day-tripping at foreign ports.

Accommodations

Cabin sizes vary greatly from ship to ship, and different cruise lines offer a whole range of cabin categories from inside cabins, with no windows at all, to rooms with balconies to suites. Your choice of cabin is an important personal choice, as it will serve as your “home-base” while aboard the ship. Cabin rates can range anywhere from $400 to $3000 per passenger.

Inside cabins are the cheapest type and lack the added space, windows and balconies of more expensive rooms. Inside cabins are good choices for passengers with a tight budget or for those who will likely be spending little time in their rooms. Window and balcony cabins may be well worth the extra cost if you tend to desire a peaceful place to relax in privacy. (more…)
